Curtin University’s International Summer School Program was recently launched with the theme ‘Resources for a Sustainable Future’.
Director General of the WA Department of Mines and Petroleum, Mr Richard Sellers was joined by delegates from Russia, Korea, Chile, Brazil, Malaysia, Japan and Perth to announce the official start of the International Summer School, which will run from 19 to 29 November, 2012.
The delegate group, consisting of 30 students, staff and resource experts from around the globe, will share their expert knowledge and discuss themes such as extracting resources in difficult and remote locations, mining and climate change, and international research.
Professor Vladimir Golovanevskiy of Curtin’s Western Australian School of the Mines (WASM) said the chance to showcase the strengths of Curtin and our State during the International Summer School was invaluable.
“This summer school is the next step in Curtin developing and strengthening relationships with premier overseas universities, especially with the cream of the crop of Russian universities,” Professor Golovanevskiy said.
“We are looking forward to showing our guests that WA is a superb place to learn about mining, mineral processing, oil and gas and other disciplines supporting the resources industry in Australia and overseas.”
Throughout the 10 day program delegates will travel to Kalgoorlie and back to Perth and will enjoy an introduction to Western Australian culture with visits to Kings Park, Wave Rock, Cottesloe beach, Kalgoorlie’s Super Pit Lookout and Mt Charlotte Reservoir. They will also be hosted by the City of Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi.
The inaugural International Summer School program was held in Russia last year and based on that success, it is envisaged that Curtin and Tomsk State University in Russia will now each hold a biannual international summer school.
The International Summer School program will cover topics exploring mining and mineral processing, oil and gas, engineering and other disciplines supporting the resources industry in Australia and internationally.
