Curtin University and Fremantle Press are giving emerging writers the opportunity to pitch their ideas to publishers and writing professionals at a free event in Margaret River on Saturday 4 June.
The Write Advice: Curtin Writing and Publishing Flash Mob, part of the Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival, gives local writers the opportunity to have a sample of their work assessed by an experienced writer, publisher or editor in a 20 minute feedback session.
Reknowned author, Dr Liz Byrski from Curtin University’s School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts, will be one of the assessors and said it was a chance for emerging writers to put forward their short stories, poetry, an extract from a novel, personal essays, feature articles, memoirs or other forms of creative non-fiction work.
“We’re looking forward to hearing from writers who want honest, professional feedback on their work – its strengths, as well as its weaknesses and its publication potential,” Dr Byrski said.
“It’s an exciting prospect because as well as providing sound advice to people who are serious about their writing, we might also discover wonderful new talent and potentially award winning writing.”
Other professionals on the panel will include Fremantle Press publisher Georgia Richter, children and young people’s author Deb Fitzpatrick and author and Curtin University lecturer Dr Rachel Robertson.
Curtin has a history of supporting Western Australian talent and offers a range of creative and professional writing courses to aspiring writers.
The panel is inviting all members of the public to submit works of no more than 5,000 words for feedback by April 25.
During the first week of May, applicants will be contacted by email advising them of the time of their appointment on 4 June.
