Curtin University, in collaboration with the Peel Health Foundation and the Murray Medical Centre, will support the new Peel Health Innovations Institute which focuses on research to improve the health and wellbeing of people in the Peel region.
The virtual institute, led by Professor Moyez Jiwa, Chair of Health Innovation in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin, will operate from the Murray Medical Centre (MMC); a fully computerised practice with more than 35,000 patients.
Professor Jiwa said the Institute would use the data collected from MMC and work with general practitioners, bringing the community, experts, researchers and medical and nursing staff together, to improve healthcare outcomes of the Peel community.
“The Peel Health Innovations Institute has strong potential for excellent outcomes with the significant joint commitment of local health practitioners and researchers. In working collaboratively, we can directly identify and address the specific healthcare needs of the Peel community,” Professor Jiwa said.
“We are already looking at ways to benefit patients by evaluating weightloss programs, providing assistance for people living with chronic conditions, support for patients on long-term medication and developing projects designed to keep patients out of hospital.
“This is a local solution to the national need for research in general practice and we have found that large numbers of our patients would enthusiastically support active involvement in their own healthcare.”.
The MMC has provided high-quality healthcare for residents in Mandurah and the surrounding areas for more than 50 years. The Peel Health Foundation has generously supported this initiative as a commitment to projects aiming to maintain the health and wellbeing of the Peel community.
