A display on Australia’s largest science project, the multi-billion dollar international Square Kilometre Array (SKA), will be one of the highlights of the Innovation Display at Curtin’s Open Day on Sunday 17 August 2008 from 10am-4pm at the University’s Bentley Campus.

The SKA will allow scientists to gather information from galaxies previously beyond reach, and visitors to the Innovation Display can learn more through the unique iDome, an interactive model specially designed for users to explore the purpose of the SKA and the science behind the project.

Professor Peter Hall, Chair of the Centre of Excellence in Radio Astronomy stressed that the University is ready to take full advantage of important Australian and international radio astronomy developments.

“With its strong cross-disciplinary capability and impressive efforts in building a radio astronomy team, Curtin is a significant contributor to the SKA,” Professor Hall said.

Other projects featured in the Innovation Display will include the latest research into the quality and supply of drinking water, how junk food can be made healthy, and Curtin’s efforts in providing beneficial research to the booming resources industry.

In addition the University’s contribution in eco-efficiency and sustainability management will feature alongside information on innovative health research in the key areas of ageing, mental health, chronic disease, Indigenous health and population health.

Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jeanette Hacket said the Innovation Display is again expected to attract hundreds of people who are curious about some of the unique research being undertaken at the largest university in Western Australia.

“The Innovation Display will be a truly fascinating experience for all future students, their families and other members of the community who bring their curiosity to Curtin Open Day,” Professor Hacket said.

“Curtin staff and students will be on hand to discuss the details of their projects and courses and explain to visitors what life on campus is really like,” she said.

“Curtin Open Day is a great way to explore career options, courses, research opportunities, scholarships, entry requirements and to see the University’s facilities, accommodation and grounds.”
