Cultivating a culturally sensitive international perspective will be the focus for thirty Year 10 students who will participate in the Sir Charles Court Young Leaders’ Program (SCCYLP) at Curtin University of Technology from July 6-10.
Now in its tenth year, the Program focuses on leadership and history and involves students from high schools across the State.
Program Coordinator Ms Sheila Flanagan, said the students will have the opportunity to meet and discuss key issues with other like-minded students.
“The Program is a fantastic learning opportunity for the students. They are exposed to a diverse group of future leaders who are dynamic, passionate and strongly motivated,” Ms Flanagan said.
The five day Program will welcome thirty students from culturally diverse backgrounds with an even mix of city and rural students.
“Students from all over the state are participating this year, from Karratha to Dongara, Christmas Island, Boddington and Kalgoorlie including a student who learns through distance education,” Ms Flanagan said.
“Due to the generous sponsorship from Curtin, the Program is free to participants, removing the obstacles of remoteness and affordability.”
The theme for this year is ‘Linking Past and Future’ and students will participate in a cross-cultural exchange of ideas concerning past and future leadership with a strong emphasis on youth empowerment.
The Program includes a range of activities to develop their leadership skills including role playing, in-depth discussions on the history of certain cultures, leadership seminars and physical challenges.
The Program draws its ethos from the joint values of John Curtin and Sir Charles Court of vision, leadership and community service.
Since its inauguration, Sir Charles Court addressed each group of young leaders at the welcoming ceremony. The Court family is continuing the tradition of patronage and support of the Program following the passing of Sir Charles last year and is represented by Mr Barry Court.
