Five Curtin Sarawak students who are recipients of the WA Government’s Premier’s Scholarship met with Dr Mike Nahan, MLA, Member for Riverton at Curtin’s Bentley Campus recently.
The students, who are studying engineering and accounting at Curtin Sarawak, have just completed one year’s study at Curtin in Perth.
Curtin Pro Vice-Chancellor, Curtin Sarawak, Professor Ian Kerr, said the scholarship, jointly funded by the State Government and Curtin, rewarded individuals who had achieved outstanding results in their studies and community activities.
“This scholarship presents some of our outstanding students in Malaysia with an opportunity to broaden their horizons and study in Perth,” Professor Kerr said.
“It is opportunities like this that help current Curtin students and exchange students to develop a better understanding of each other’s culture and tradition.”
Engineering student, Su Ning Ling, said her 12 months at Curtin’s Bentley Campus had been the most memorable in her time as a student.
“The study abroad experience has helped me gain insights about myself and Australian culture, whilst also broadening my view of the world,” Miss Ling said.
“Living overseas and experiencing the opportunities provided by the WA State Government and Curtin has strengthened my determination to reach my career goals.”
Established in 2003, the scholarship enables recipients to complete their final year of study in Perth.
The State Government covers the cost of airfare and living arrangements for each student, and Curtin covers the cost of tuition fees.
Danny Wong and Yi Xui Chan are also studying engineering, while Lanny Lim and Henry Hii are studying accounting and finance.
Mr Hii said he hoped to work in corporate and institutional finance.
“After graduation I plan to go back to Malaysia and become an auditor with one of the big four accounting firms,” he said.
