What is Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year, sometimes also known as the Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, marks the beginning of a new year based on the lunar calendar. It’s a time to sweep away the old, welcome the new and celebrate fresh beginnings with family, food and festive traditions.

This ancient holiday has roots in lunar calendar systems, with each new year starting with the moon arriving at the nearest midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

There are many different rituals and festivities associated with the festival, like the famous tale of the Nian, a monster who feared loud noises, bright lights and the colour red, explaining the explosion of firecrackers, red decorations and cheerful celebrations during this time to ward the monster away.

Some households are thoroughly cleaned, symbolising ridding the previous year’s bad luck and welcoming in good luck for the coming year.
