E-rideables are becoming increasingly popular among the Curtin community as convenient and environmentally friendly modes of transport. However, charging and storing these devices indoors poses health and safety risks, primarily due to their lithium-ion batteries.

What are e-rideables?

E-rideables – Any electric rideable device including, but not limited to, electric bicycles (e-bikes), electric scooters (e-scooters) and electric skateboards (e-skateboards). Mobility devices used primarily for aiding mobility (e.g. mobility scooters, powered wheelchairs) are excluded.

New e-rideable regulations from Monday, 14 October 2024

While the use of e-rideables is encouraged, to ensure the health and safety of the Curtin community new e-rideable regulations will apply at Curtin’s WA campuses from Monday, 14 October 2024 as follows:

  • Charging or storing e-rideables and/or their batteries inside office buildings, classrooms or inhabited spaces is not permitted.
  • E-rideables and/or their batteries, must only be stored and charged in specified bicycle hubs or designated bicycle racks. This includes University-owned devices.
  • Users should ensure their battery chargers are tested and tagged before charging on campus.
  • No homemade or modified e-rideables or their batteries are permitted anywhere on campus.
  • Users are responsible for securing and locking their own e-rideables.
  • The University reserves the right to remove any e-rideable from campus where it is stored or charged outside of these regulations.

E-rideable storing and charging

E-rideable storing and charging is only permissible at:

  • Specified bike hubs located at B160, B214, B315, B610, as identified on the map below. Users must apply for swipe card access to these facilities via the bike hub access request form on the Curtin Properties website; OR
