Everline was initially motivated to study nursing by her desire to help people and wear scrubs. Initially starting with a Certificate IV and Diploma in Health and Nursing Studies, she enjoyed the idea of gaining an understanding of the healthcare industry at first, to see if she wanted to further explore it as a career. Once she began, she was hooked and
her subsequent jobs in hospitals have provided a firsthand look at both the challenges and fulfillment of healthcare work. After her meaningful experience and time in the healthcare industry, Everline solidified her passion for Nursing. This practical experience not only helped shape her future but also gave her a deep appreciation for the impact nurses have on patients’ lives at an early stage of her career.
Transitioning from the hands-on focus of TAFE to the theoretical nature of university was a significant shift for Everline. Despite the initial challenge of adjusting to more writing and reading, entering her second year of university has given her a newfound confidence as she is more organised and on top of her assignments than ever before. Another challenge Everline has overcome throughout her academic journey is that she used to consider herself a germaphobe and struggled with bodily fluids. However, today working in a hospital has completely defeated this fear and is accustomed to it.
Looking ahead this year, Everline is most excited about the lab classes, where she can work on mannequins, gain further practical skills and immediately apply them to her work, whilst of course learning with friends who make university enjoyable. Everline’s advice to future nursing students is to gain work experience and certificates before pursuing a nursing degree, she now understands the field from a multifaceted perspective and thinks it is an essential part of the nurse she is today.
Everline comes from a family of overachievers, where a strong work ethic and a drive for excellence are deeply ingrained. Her brother, a surgeon, is a testament to this, constantly pursuing further education and excellence in his field. Her parents instilled in Everline a deep appreciation for hard work and perseverance. This upbringing has taught her the value of education and the importance of continually striving for academic improvement. As a result, Everline approaches her studies and work with dedication and an understanding that there is always more to absorb.
After graduating, Everline aspires to work in a children’s hospital, focusing on paediatrics. She plans to gain work experience before potentially pursuing further study in medical radiology. Regardless of where her future takes her next, Everline will continue to lean into her commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth.
