University is more than just lectures and exams—it’s about growth, new experiences and preparing for the future. One of the best ways to make the most of your university experience is by becoming a Curtin Student Ambassador.
But first, what is a Curtin Student Ambassador?
A Student Ambassador is a role where you can represent Curtin in the community by helping high school students learn what uni life is really like. You get to guide campus tours, speak at events and assist with outreach activities, all while developing valuable skills along the way (and a whole lot more!)
At Curtin, the Student Ambassador Program is officially recognised through Curtin Extra, which means any contributions you make to the program will stand out on your resume.
With a flexible commitment of 35 volunteer hours over two semesters, it’s an excellent opportunity to develop valuable skills, meet amazing people and build a strong foundation for your future career.
If you’re looking for an extra-curricular program to try this year, here are four reasons from some of our former Student Ambassadors on why you should take the plunge.
1. You will master public speaking and communication
Public speaking can be daunting, but it’s an essential skill for any career. As a Student Ambassador, you’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience delivering speeches and engaging with diverse audiences. Zoe, an occupational therapy student, shared her experience: “Being a Student Ambassador really helped with my public speaking skills. I learned how to effectively deliver speeches to high school students and engage them using a variety of presentation techniques. With regular opportunities to practise, I have grown into a much more confident speaker.”
2. You’ll develop your leadership and teamwork skills
Leadership isn’t just about giving orders—it’s about guiding and motivating a team while ensuring smooth coordination. Tahlia, a humanities student, found that her role challenged her to adapt to different situations and work effectively with her peers and as a leader.
“Organising and communicating instructions to large groups of high school students, whilst also leading a group of my fellow ambassadors, was a challenge at first, but I learnt to adapt to the different groups of students and make sure that my instructions were clear and engaging.”
3. You’ll strengthen your career-ready skills
Career-ready skills are the essential abilities and skills that prepare you for success in the workplace. They go beyond academic knowledge and are highly valued by employers across all industries. Sean, a marketing student, highlighted how the program equipped him with transferable skills that he will take with him into his future career.
“The skills I developed during the Student Ambassador Program are extremely transferable, both to my future career and as a marketing student. The public speaking skills I practised will benefit me in all areas of life, especially in marketing, where effectively delivering messages and engaging audiences is key.”
4. You’ll build meaningful connections and network with students and staff
Beyond skill development, being a Student Ambassador gives you the opportunity to work in a professional setting, network with your peers and form lasting relationships. Jaswant, an engineering and data science student, found his experience incredibly fulfilling.
“The program offered me a unique experience working in a professional environment where I learnt a lot about myself and how I connect with others. The Curtin staff I worked with set a great example for me. This experience has inspired me to emulate their professionalism and dedication.”
Becoming a Student Ambassador is extra-curricular experience that offers far more than just a Certificate or Digital Badge (though, you’ll get those too). Whether you’re looking to gain confidence in public speaking, strengthen your leadership skills, prepare for your career or expand your network, becoming a Student Ambassador has so many benefits that will help you grow in your personal and professional life.
If you’re ready to step out of your comfort zone, consider becoming a Student Ambassador this year—you never know where it might lead.
