Healthy Hobbies with Ortinel

A student, Ortinel, stands smiling in front of some art and greenery.

Meet Ortinel, a proactive and multitalented Master of Occupational Therapy student.

With a unique blend of academic dedication, wellbeing, and artistic flair, Ortinel today navigates his postgraduate studies with intentional healthy hobbies. Ortinel’s journey to get to healthy hobbies started during his high school years where he was a competitive sprinter. As a natural overachiever and go getter, he excelled in athletics and maintained a strict routine to stay at the top of his game. During this time, Ortinel was heavily focused on physical health and felt that becoming a physiotherapist one day aligned with his interests and future goals. However, he decided to study an undergraduate degree in exercise science to keep his options open.

Throughout his studies, Ortinel realised that physical health was just one aspect of overall wellbeing. His university experience forced him to delve into the importance of mental health, which he found to be crucial in becoming the best version of oneself. Balancing university and life were challenging at first, but over time, Ortinel implemented boundaries that transformed his perspective on both. He found serious value in staying open with his tutors and lecturers, who supported him when he needed it, and began to establish routines that include time for personal interests and self-care. Ortinel’s practice of taking a day of rest each week became vital for his mental well-being, helping him recharge and stay focused.

This journey led Ortinel to conclude that Occupational Therapy best suited his future, as it encompasses support, rehabilitation, and a holistic approach to health. Since studying OT, he has had the opportunity to go on various placements, from gyms to private practices, gaining a comprehensive understanding of his field. Ortinel appreciates not having to choose his placements, as he enjoys new opportunities and environments.

Although academics and health are major aspects of who Ortinel is, he enjoys being a multifaceted individual open to trying new things. Another major aspect of Ortinel is hip-hop music. He fell in love with hip-hop at the age of eight and has used it as an outlet to express his mind and create positive rap music ever since. Last year, Ortinel participated in Curtin’s Talent 4 Tomorrow competition, where he showcased his skills and passion for rap. Performing original songs, Ortinel brought together his two worlds of academics and music, surprising many of his tutors and peers with his talent. This experience highlighted the university’s support for students’ diverse talents and provided a platform for Ortinel to express himself creatively. You can check out Ortinel’s music by visiting his Instagram profile: @Ortinelg – he has also just recently dropped a brand-new single!

Ortinel underscores the importance of maintaining healthy hobbies alongside academic responsibilities, with rap music serving as his crucial outlet for balance and motivation. He encourages students to embrace new experiences, focus on self-improvement, and integrate healthy hobbies into their lives. Looking ahead, Ortinel is determined to make a significant impact in both his professional and artistic endeavours. With plans to complete his Master’s degree within a year and start working in occupational therapy, he is dedicated to contributing positively to the community. Simultaneously, he intends to continue his music career, using hip-hop as a platform to address important social issues.
