Welcome to Curtin – and more importantly, welcome to the beginning of your future career!

Did you know that you can start building your employability the moment you start uni? It’s a misconception that you need to wait until you’ve graduated to start your career. By building your professional skills now, you can get ahead of the curve before you even start class.

On 18 and 19 July, Student Success Kalgoorlie in partnership with Recruit Curtin and Curtin Careers will be hosting a series of workshops on personal brand, resume writing, networking and more to support you in developing your professional skills. Accompanied by industry partners, you’ll get a taste of what local industry are looking for and what kind of skills you need to thrive in your career.

Here are four reasons why you should make the most of Curtin Career workshops now and into the future.

They will help you build your professional skills

“Curtin Careers provided me with key insights about how to be effective in the job-hunting process, along with many pieces of advice to help improve my CV, cover letter, LinkedIn, company search, behaviours, and posture in interviews. They then allowed us to apply practical conversation and networking with industry members at different events, such as careers fairs, industry nights, workshops, volunteering and more.” – Joan Kayk de Oliveira Ferreira, Master of Professional Engineering.

They provide opportunities for students to directly connect with local industry

“The main factor that contributed to me securing employment in my field was making good connections and having a wide network. I was able to do this by making myself as ‘visible’ to the industry as much as possible by getting involved in events organised by the University, industry partners and more.” – Nigel Angelo, Master of Professional Engineering.

They can give you the tools to hit the ground running in your career

Using V-Mock made the process of improving my resume simpler. The university also organised workshops for networking, writing cover letters, and improving one’s resume which to this day, I still use, particularly my networking skills. Another service that the uni offers is being able to speak with career development consultants to walk you through how to get started with finding a job and starting your career.” – Nigel Angelo, Master of Professional Engineering.

They prepare you for taking part in an assessment centre

An assessment centre is a group of activities run over the course of a day to test your aptitudes, behaviours and skills in a work-like environment. They’re usually facilitated by local industry in partnership with Curtin and include group activities, presentations, social testing and individual interviews, but can encompass many different things and are almost always done in a group setting.

Assessment centres have been found to be comparable, if not better than, individual interviews at testing whether a candidate would perform well and make a good fit for an organisation.

With the Curtin Careers workshops under your belt, you can attend an assessment centre well prepared to demonstrate your professionalism and skill to potential employers.

Plus, if you attend the workshops during the last two days of O-Week, you can get a head start and have your professional documents and newly gained skills reviewed by our career consultants during Employability Week (22 – 26 July).

“I encourage students to join every event as you might be presented with an opportunity during one of those events.” – “Ronny” Yiyang Lin, Master of Professional Engineering.
