In an inspiring display of community spirit, students from Curtin Kalgoorlie attended the Kalgoorlie Boulder Urban Landcare Group (KBULG)‘s annual Tree Planting Day event on Sunday 30 July.
About 30 students participating in Curtin Volunteers! joined community members and industry representatives to plant close to 4000 seedlings of native plants along Meldrum Avenue.
Beyond the environmental impact, the event presented an opportunity for students to network with key individuals from industry. With representatives from Northern Star Resources, Evolution Mining, the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder and more, this was a chance to foster professional connections and gain insights into potential career paths.
Students expressed a sense of fulfillment in playing an active part in their local community, and learned valuable soft skills such as teamwork, leadership and communication. Through this unique experience, students learned the importance of highlighting opportunities like this within their resumes to show their commitment to community engagement and social responsibility, which are highly sought after skills by employers.
As part of the event, the KBULG also hosted giveaways and prizes for volunteers, which Curtin Kalgoorlie student Ranjith Lakshmin was lucky to win. Students also assisted with the free BBQ that was held for volunteers on the day.
