After a bye week, the Carnabys enjoyed their first home game of the 2023 UBL season with a fantastic event at Curtin Stadium. Attendees enjoyed free snacks, kombucha, and free game day merch as they watched the Carnabys take on La Trobe University

Men’s

When the Carnabys men’s team last faced La Trobe in 2022, they suffered a 33-point loss. However, the recent reunion yielded different results.

The Carnabys delivered their best performance so far this season, resulting in their first win of the year. Three-and-a-half minutes into the game, the Carnabys made their way to the scoreboard with a two-point jump shot from Tobey Martin (#11) and didn’t look back.

As the quarter ended, the Carnabys led with a six-point margin of 23-17, which set the tone for the rest of the game.

The Carnabys dominated the court by working in unity to carefully execute their plays. Each player also did well at contributing their strengths during their minutes on the court. There were some strong assists and rebounds from Carnabys captain Dylan Griechen (#15), Zac Harris (#21), Kane Waters (#25), and Mason Tion (#17), as well as generous agility from Husam Roamer (#9) and Tim Hollick (#7).

The top scorer for this game was 21-point star Dyson Lowe (#31), who snuck in two free throws with one minute left in the game. Lowe’s scorecard was followed by Tobey with 18 points and Ali Rammal (#29) with 15 points.

However, nine players in total took and made their shot in the basket, which resulted in the Carnabys celebrating their first win for 2023. The final score was 91-74.

Women’s

Refreshed after a bye week, the Carnabys women’s side displayed more discipline in the LTU game. Unfortunately, they missed out on the win by just six points.

The Carnabys started off trailing slightly behind until teaching student, Sharita Miranda (#18) sunk in two free throws to bring the board to a draw at the end of the first quarter.

La Trobe then increased the margin as the Carnabys struggled to make baskets and caused a few turnovers in the second term. However, the third quarter saw the Carnabys play a different tune.

Marketing student, Ella Thornton-Elliot (#20) fired up two 3-point shots in the third period after a few misses earlier on. Carnabys Guard Sarah Allen (#24) and physio student Shenae Hartree (#30) also sunk some threes. Adding to the list is 5’2 Point Guard, Jemma Gartrell (#6), who proved her height won’t get in the way of scoring from behind the arc.

With a few seconds left of the third quarter, Occupational Therapy student, Eloise Farrington (#16) swept up the ball from La Trobe and got the layup to shrink the margin to three points.

Despite outscoring La Trobe in the third quarter, the Carnabys missed some crucial shots as La Trobe tightened up its defence in the final quarter. The Carnabys were also charged with a couple of fouls which La Trobe used to extend their lead. The final score was 76-82 in favour of La Trobe.
