The holiday season brings many of us the opportunity to unwind, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy a well-deserved break. However, it can also be the perfect time to give back to the community. Volunteering during the holidays can be an enriching experience that not only helps those in need but also allows you to develop new skills, meet new people, and even enhance your resume.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering is a fantastic way to give back while gaining valuable life experiences. It can help you develop new skills, enhance your CV and connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for making a difference. Plus, there’s something incredibly rewarding about contributing your time and effort to support your community, especially during the festive season.

Opportunities on campus
  • Curtin Volunteers! is a fantastic initiative that connects students with a variety of volunteer opportunities both on campus and in the local community. This program regularly hosts events and activities where you can lend a helping hand while getting to know your fellow students. Here are a few ways to get involved:
  • Community service events: Throughout the holidays, Curtin Volunteers! organises various events, such as clean-up days at local parks or food drives for those in need. Keep an eye on their calendar for upcoming opportunities that fit your schedule.
  • Mentoring programs: If you’re looking for a way to make a lasting impact, consider participating in mentoring programs through uni. Sharing your knowledge and experiences can inspire younger students to pursue their own educational goals, as well as connecting with new people. There are many types of mentoring with different focal aspects like mentoring first year students, weekly social groups for folks with autism and other related conditions and peer academic, so sign- up for something that interests you!
  • Campus events: Volunteer at campus events, such as orientation days or open days, to help welcome new students and share your insights about university life. It’s a great way to build community spirit while having fun! These events pop up through CV! or by being a part of campus programs like New To Curtin Mentors.
Local volunteering opportunities

If you’re interested in branching out beyond campus, there are plenty of local organisations in need of volunteers during the holiday season. Here are a few ideas to consider:

  • Food banks: Many local food banks increase their efforts during the holidays to ensure everyone has access to meals. Volunteering your time to help sort, package, or distribute food can be incredibly fulfilling.
  • Op-shops: Local op-shops often look for volunteers to help with sorting donations and assisting customers. This is a great way to support sustainability, whilst gaining retail experience. Some of the big chains like Red Cross, Good Sammy’s, Vinnies and Salvos always have volunteering portals open, and are always looking for new volunteers!
  • Animal shelters: If you’re an animal lover, consider volunteering at a nearby animal shelter. Whether it’s being an animal care volunteer at Perth Zoo, helping out at RSCPA, or going in person to your local shelter or animal home to offer your service, your time can make a real difference in the lives of animals looking for homes.
  • Community events: Look out for local holiday events, such as community festivals or parades, where you can lend a hand. These events often rely on volunteers for setup, coordination, and cleanup. The best places to look are your local councils, Volunteering WA and government sites
Build your skills while helping businesses

Volunteering doesn’t have to be limited to non-profits or community events. Many local businesses also appreciate the help, especially during the busy holiday season. Here’s how you can give back while building skills:

  • Internships and work experience: Some local businesses may offer volunteer internships that allow you to gain industry experience while supporting their operations. This could involve anything from event planning to marketing assistance. It’s a win-win situation!

  • Small business support: Many small businesses look for volunteers during the holiday rush. Offering your time to help with marketing, customer service or even social media can be incredibly beneficial for them while giving you hands-on experience in your field of study.

This holiday season, consider stepping out of your comfort zone and getting involved in your community through volunteering. Whether you choose to participate in Curtin Volunteers!, help at local food banks, or lend a hand to local businesses, your contributions can make a meaningful impact. Plus, the connections and experiences you gain will enrich your university journey and leave you feeling fulfilled.

Gather your friends, get involved, and make this holiday season one of giving and community spirit. After all, the best gifts are those that come from the heart!
