You may have seen recent media reports about a video recorded through our lecture capture system showing students making a number of racial slurs. The lecture had been officially cancelled but a number of students were using the room and their comments were recorded and loaded onto our learning management system. As soon as the University became aware of the video, it was taken down.
Curtin is a proudly multicultural, global university. We expect all members of our community to uphold our values and signature behaviours, which includes behaving with integrity and treating others with respect. While the behaviour depicted in the video is clearly not acceptable, I know the vast majority of our students and staff do believe in and live our values.
I have met with the Curtin Student Guild President who also expressed her disappointment at the students’ behaviour.
The University is taking this matter very seriously and has launched an investigation. Any students involved will be dealt with in accordance with our disciplinary processes.
