The shared paths surrounding the Bentley Campus are used by staff, students and the local community.
We all have a responsibility to share these paths and use courtesy, to avoid accidents and ensure we can all have a safe and enjoyable trip.
The golden rule of shared paths is that the person in the less vulnerable position should be mindful of the more vulnerable user. For cyclists, this means being mindful of pedestrians, including those who may be more vulnerable such as the elderly, children or those with a disability.
Here are some key tips for using shared paths:
- Try to keep to the left, be aware of your surroundings and look up regularly if you are using your phone.
- Cyclists should give way to all pedestrians on shared paths. Pedestrians include people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters and wheeled recreational devices.
- As a courtesy, cyclists should use their bell to indicate that you’re approaching a pedestrian and allow enough time for the pedestrian to move to the side.
- Be mindful and courteous to users who may need to move at a slower pace, or require a wider berth.
