Thirty Year 10 students from across WA will participate in the prestigious Sir Charles Court Young Leaders Program (SCCYLP) at Curtin University of Technology from 4 – 8 July.
Curtin’s SCCYLP Program Coordinator, Sheila Flanagan, said participants would have the opportunity to meet and discuss key issues with other like-minded students.
“The program, now in its 12th year, is a fantastic learning opportunity for the students. They are exposed to a diverse group of leaders in their fields who are dynamic, passionate and wonderful role models for the students,” Ms Flanagan said.
The theme for the five-day program is ‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’
Ms Flanagan said the students would participate in a range of activities aimed at developing their leadership skills such as role playing, in-depth discussions on the history of certain cultures, leadership seminars and physical challenges.
The program draws its ethos from the joint values of former wartime Prime Minister John Curtin and former WA Premier Sir Charles Court of vision, leadership and community service. Students selected for the program demonstrate these values.
A member of the Court family, Mr Barry Court (son of Sir Charles Court), will address the young leaders at the welcoming ceremony on 4 July.
Guest speakers include Rosinda Seara, the Premier’s Teacher of the Year in 2008 and recipient of an Australian Government Public Service Medal (for services to education) in the Queen’s birthday honours list 2010 and David Humphreys, who was a participant in the program in 2000 and has been involved as peer tutor, assistant and supporter ever since.
Other presenters include Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan; Hugh Evans, founder of the Oaktree Foundation and now CEO of the Global Poverty Project; Professor Jorg Imberger, Director of UWA’s Centre for Water Research and Melissa Parke MP, Federal Member for Fremantle.
