With one in five Australians suffering from mental illness in any given year, mental health first aid is a valuable skill to have. Curtin pharmacy alumna and lecturer Marlene Lim shares her expertise on the topic.

The perception of news credibility with Miriam Gichomo
Curtin PhD student Miriam Gichomo is conducting research into the credibility of news, measuring how trustworthy the news is perceived by consumers. Miriam conducted a survey targeting people aged 18 and above to capture their attitudes toward news. Miriam hopes her research will make journalists aware of how sensationalised news affects the public, and to inspire more caution in how news is presented.
Scientific visualisation using immerseive VR with Dewi Ungu
Curtin PhD student Dewi Ungu is conducting research in immersive virtual reality as a teaching tool for students of molecular chemistry. Dewi’s interest in combining science and VR was sparked by watching sci-fi movies. Dewi conducts her research by observing how students interact with immersive VR and interviewing them about their learning experience to compare the benefits of VR with more traditional tools.
3D printing and congential heart disease with Ivan Lau
Curtin PhD student Ivan Lau is researching the benefits of 3D printing heart models for planning congenital heart disease surgeries. Congenital heart disease is common in newborns and includes any heart abnormality present at birth. The current approach for planning these surgeries is to use digital reconstructions of the heart. Ivan uses CT scans and ultrasounds to generate a file to print the personalised heart models.
Changing and dynamic nature of work demands with Belinda Cham
Curtin PhD student Belinda Cham studies how people perform in extreme work environments at Curtin University’s Future of Work Institute. While Belinda was doing applied research for Australian Defence she discovered a lot of interesting but unanswered questions. Extreme work environments can include jobs that are complex, confined, or isolated for long durations. Belinda’s research aims to unpack the factors that help people endure under these conditions.
Health of Tiger Snakes in Urban Wetlands with Damian Lettoof
Curtin PhD student Damian Lettoof is conducting research on tiger snakes and the effect of pollution in wetlands on their health. In the field, Damian takes measurements and samples, and then releases the snakes back in the wetlands.
Creating a mentoring program for adults with autism with Julia Tan
Curtin PhD student Julia Tang is developing online mentoring programs for adults with autism to help them navigate social and emotional situations. Julia uses eye tracking technology to carry out her research. Julia has developed a program called MindChip, which uses teleconferencing technology to connect participants with mentors.
Exploring textile construction with Jessica Priemus
Curtin PhD student Jessica Priemus is conducting research into textiles, and how cloth can tell the story of its own production. Jessica’s research began at a women’s cooperative in Bangladesh, where she studied how woven cloth was produced. After weaving her own experimental cloth samples, Jessica interviewed people in both Bangladesh and Perth to gauge their level of knowledge in textiles.

Born and raised in Myanmar, Annika’s passion for helping her community developed from a young age. While studying, Annika became the President of Curtin Volunteers! and led student volunteer teams on various programs and projects to help indigenous, local and rural communities. She was also an advocate for teenage suicide prevention via John Curtin Leadership Academy.

Jess Clark currently the Graphic Designer at Optus Stadium (VenuesLive) where she is I am responsible for the creative execution of all print, digital, web and press artworks across the organisation. Jess is also the Brand Manager at her family’s small business - Treerings Australia. Treerings are compact fertiliser rings, made from recycled-waste materials. Jess is helping to brand and market Treerings formally & professionally, so they can be accessible on shelves in nurseries across Australia.
