Refund and Remission of Fees – request for review

If your application for a Refund and Remission of Fees due to Special Circumstances was unsuccessful and you are not satisfied with the decision, you may request a review within 28 days of receiving the initial outcome.

What to include with your request for review

  • A written statement outlining your reasons for requesting a review of the original decision. You must address the eligibility criteria you didn’t meet in your original application according to the initial outcome provided to you.
  • Any further evidence or documentation not previously included with your original application.

Please submit your request for review via this webform (login required).

Review process and outcome of the request for review

The review request will be assessed within a 35-day timeframe, starting from the date of receipt. The assessment will be conducted by an independent person who was not previously involved in the original decision-making process.

After the internal review process has concluded and a decision has been reached, it will be considered final. There will be no further opportunities for internal appeal under the refund and fee remission procedure.

The outcome of the review will be communicated via email. In the event of an unsuccessful review, the notification will provide the reasons for the determination and offer guidance on available options for external appeal.

Further review and appeal process

If you disagree with the final decision, you may apply to the following external agencies to have your case reconsidered:

Administrative Review Tribunal (ART)

If you are enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), or a Domestic Fee-Paying place and you have elected to defer all or part of your fees through FEE HELP loan scheme you may seek a review with the Administrative Review Tribunal.

The application must be lodged at the ART within 28 days of receiving the Request for Review outcome from Curtin University. Students are strongly advised to visit the ART website or to call 1300 366 700 (or +61 8 9327 7200 if you are overseas) to learn about the review process, the applicable fees and the time limit for lodging an application for review.

Ombudsman Western Australia

For domestic and international students who have paid fees upfront to the University you may seek a review with the Western Australia Ombudsman if you believe the internal appeals process of the university has been unfairly or unreasonably administered.

The Ombudsman will not make a decision regarding the outcome of your application, however they may recommend the reconsideration of your case by the university if it is determined that an inadequacy has occurred in the original handling of the matter.
