Is the VET pathway right for me?
It’s the right pathway if you have:
- a certificate IV, a diploma or an advanced diploma
- completed your study at a public TAFE or other VET provider, including high schools, private institutions and online providers.
Your VET qualification can be used to meet entry requirements for a range of Curtin undergraduate courses. You might even get credit for your prior learning, saving you time and money on your degree.
How to get into Curtin with a VET qualification
Diploma or advanced diploma
If you’ve completed a diploma or advanced diploma:
- you can get into our courses that have a guaranteed ATAR of 70
- you might also get into courses that have minimum or higher ATARs
- you automatically meet our English language requirements.
You’ll just need to check that you meet any extra subject prerequisites or entry requirements for your course. Find your course on our website to see its specific entry requirements.
Certificate IV
If you’re wondering whether you can get into uni with a cert IV, the answer is yes! With a certificate IV qualification, you will:
- be eligible to study most undergraduate courses with a guaranteed ATAR of 70
- need to show English language competency separately. Check our English language requirements to see what tests or qualifications we accept.
Certificates I, II or III
If you’ve completed a certificate I, II or III, you may be able to:
- apply to Curtin through portfolio entry
- study a bridging or enabling course.
Portfolio entry
Portfolio entry is an experience-based entry pathway that provides entry to a range of Curtin courses. Through portfolio entry, you apply for your preferred course with a portfolio of documents that showcase your VET studies, other qualifications, work experience, extra-curricular activities and suitability for university study.
Bridging pathways
Consider applying for one of Curtin’s free bridging or enabling programs. These programs run for 1 to 2 semesters and provide a pathway into a range of undergraduate degrees.

Get credit for your VET study
If you have a diploma or advanced diploma, you could get credit towards your Curtin degree.
Credit for recognised learning (CRL) – also known as advanced standing or recognition of prior learning – exempts you from studying certain units. This reduces your total course fee and can also cut the length of your degree, meaning you can graduate sooner.
Here are some examples of popular bridging pathways from TAFE to uni, and how CRL reduces the duration of the related degree. These examples are for current intakes and are intended as a guide only.
Don’t see your qualification listed here? Don’t worry. We accept hundreds of VET qualifications – too many to list here! Use our online tool to check if you’re eligible for CRL or contact Curtin Connect for personalised advice.
