What is the Chicago referencing style?

UPDATED 13 NOV 2024 | 8:09AM

The Chicago referencing style comes in two formats:

  • Notes and Bibliography which uses a numerical system of footnotes for the in-text citations and provides a bibliography
  • Author-Date which uses the author and date for the in-text citations and provides a reference list.
The Library’s Chicago referencing guide provides examples of how to reference materials in accordance with the Chicago Author-Date style. For information and examples for the footnotes version, see the Chicago Manual of Style.
