What is professional practice?
Professional practice (also known as placements, clinics or practicals) is where a student is required to extend knowledge and skills within a face to face practical environment. This is different to work integrated learning (WIL) or work experience, as it is required to be undertaken as a part of their university studies (usually as a unit requirement).
For example, an occupational therapy or physiotherapy student will be required as part of their degree to go out into their field, either at a hospital or clinic and train under supervision to gain the experience and skills required in a practical environment.
Similarly, education students are required to undertake professional practice teaching in schools and whilst being mentored by a senior teacher, will be guided in teaching and behavioural management strategies.
As a current Curtin student, your course coordinator or relevant teaching administration will provide you with further information about professional practice.
