English language proficiency

To be eligible for entry to Curtin, you need to be able to demonstrate proficiency in English.

You can demonstrate your English abilities through a number of recognised tests and qualifications. For example, you can meet English if you have achieved a scaled mark of 50 or above in an English ATAR subject as part of your high school qualification; or if you have achieved a score of 140 in the Written English component of the STAT (Special Tertiary Admissions Test).

Prerequisites

Prerequisites are subjects or units you must complete before starting a Curtin course or taking a higher-level unit.

For example, to be eligible for entry to the Bachelor of Science (Multidisciplinary Science) you need to have completed the Mathematics Applications prerequisite.

You usually study prerequisite subjects in high school, but you can also study prerequisite equivalents through TAFE or other external providers.

If your course has prerequisites, they will be listed underneath the admission criteria on each course page.

Find out which Curtin English course is for you

We will tell you how many weeks of English you need and which courses at Curtin English you should take. This will depend on your current level of English and the minimum level of English required for your mainstream course (your undergraduate or postgraduate course at Curtin). This is called your pathway.

If you already have recent results from a recognised English language proficiency test

Please send us your test results and we will use these results to plan your pathway. Recognised tests include IELTS (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), PTE (Pearson Test of English) or Linguaskill. Want to learn more about accepted English proficiency tests?

If you have results from another test results, such as Duolingo, please let us know and we may be able to use it for Pathway planning

If you don’t know your current level of English

You have several options.

Linguaskill:

Linguaskill results are valid for Curtin English and also for entry to mainstream programs if you achieve a high enough score.

To arrange a Linquaskill test please submit a request via our online system.

Password:

Curtin English can provide an online placement test, known as Password, to determine your current level of English and then to plan your pathway. This is only possible if you are using a Curtin registered agent. The Password test is provided free of charge.

1. Agents can request a Password Test on your behalf by contacting Curtin English via this form.

2. If you have problems contacting a representative/agent in your region, please contact us.

Password is not a proficiency test and cannot be used to meet the entry requirements of Curtin University mainstream courses.

Other

You can, of course, take any of the other recognised tests and submit your results

Navitas Partnership

Curtin English has an agreement with Navitas English to work in partnership for the delivery of classes at the lower levels of English. Curtin University Pathway students who need extended English will start their studies at Navitas English and transfer to Curtin English when they reach a level equivalent to IELTS 5.

As a Curtin student who needs extended English, you will begin your journey at Navitas English’s city centre school, which offers you a very different experience, studying with students of different backgrounds and motives. Once reaching the equivalent of an IELTS 5, you transfer to Curtin English on the vibrant Curtin University campus, getting used to university life before starting your mainstream course. It can be hard to maintain motivation when you have full-time English study for a year or more. This change of environment will help to break up your student journey and reduce this problem.

A strong Curtin identity is retained from day 1, you’ll be issued with a Curtin e-mail and student card. Students commencing at the Navitas English campus have access to all the facilities offered at the Curtin University Perth campus, but you also access all the benefits Navitas has to offer to their English language students. The best of both worlds!

Curtin English and Navitas are working closely together to be sure that the students receive the right level of support and reach the right level before transferring to Curtin. We believe that this unique collaborative arrangement brings great benefits for our students.
